Clinical Training Reform

This program area focuses on the Clinical Education and Training which looks at improving and expanding access to quality clinical training for health professionals in training across the public, private and non-government sectors.

Information, Analysis and Planning

National health workforce planning includes analysis of supply and demand trends and the provision of advice to government and other stakeholders to inform decision making on a range of workforce policy and program matters.

Workforce Innovation and Reform

A national program of health workforce innovation and reform will be developed and delivered by HWA. This will encourage the development of health workforce models to support new models of healthcare delivery, facilitate inter-professional practice and equip health professionals and employers to successfully manage current and emerging demands on the health care sector.

The National Training Plan

The development of a National Training Plan (‘The Plan’) is being undertaken by Health Workforce Australia (HWA) to assist in achieving a goal of self-sufficiency in the supply of doctors, nurses and midwives by 2025.

Work With Us

HWA offers a range of unique opportunities for people to work on major reforms to the Australian health workforce within an organisation committed to innovation and collaboration with the health and education sectors, both public and non-government.

Welcome to Health Workforce Australia

Welcome to the Health Workforce Australia (HWA) website - a central hub to find information on all things health workforce related in Australia.

HWA is an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG). It was established to meet the future challenges of providing a health workforce that responds to the needs of the Australian Community.

HWA will develop policy and deliver programs across four main areas—workforce planning, policy and research; clinical education; innovation and reform of the health workforce; and the recruitment and retention of international health professionals. HWA will also consider the adequacy and availability of workforce data.
