In the 2014 Budget the Australian Government announced the closure of Health Workforce Australia (HWA), with essential functions transferring to the Department of Health. All current funding commitments will be honoured. HWA as an entity will be wound up, with legislation currently before the Parliament. Existing funding arrangements and other business functions will be managed by the Department of Health from 7 August 2014.
In common with other developed nations, Australia’s health workforce is under tremendous pressure and must undergo significant transformation to meet the rapidly rising demands for healthcare.
For Australia to continue to have a high-quality health system that is sustainable and affordable, we need to look at how the health workforce can provide health services differently.
There is no simple solution to address the complex health workforce issues - a package of measures is needed. HWA is the national workforce agency that is progressing this work.
The Federal Budget was released on Tuesday 13 May 2014 and the Government has decided to close Health Workforce Australia.
