Health Workforce 2025

Health Workforce 2025 (HW2025) was first initiated by State and Territory health ministers, through the Standing Council on Health, to provide medium to long-term national workforce planning projections for doctors, nurses and midwives.

In 2012, HW2025 Doctors, Nurses and Midwives was released, providing Australia’s first major, long-term, national projections for these professions, and its findings were endorsed by SCoH.

Recognising the value of national planning for a sustainable health workforce, HWA is continuing to build the evidence base on Australia’s health workforce by expanding the HW2025 program to encompass different professions and sectors.

During the next phase, HW2025 will focus on the oral health sector and other selected health occupations.

As well as providing national projections, the HW2025 program will identify a range of policy considerations covering workforce reform, training, immigration and geographical distribution, to help ensure Australia’s health workforce meets the community’s needs.
