Mapping Clinical Placements

The Hon Julia Gillard PM launching HWA's Clinical Training Funding project

A key function of HWA is to support greater training capacity in the healthcare system by providing funding to support growth of clinical placements for professional entry health courses.

As part of this project, an evidence base of quantitative data which details the baseline clinical training placement activity will be developed. This will be complimented by activities which aim to understand the potential for growth in clinical placements, by profession and health provider setting.

Additionally, the project will make recommendations on Integrated Regional Training Networks (IRTNs), which the Australian Health Ministers have agreed will coordinate the clinical placements.

HWA has appointed PwC and PhillipsKPA to undertake this project.

Objectives

The objectives of the project are to:

  • establish a baseline against which growth will be measured and funded across 24 professions nationally
  • collect and verify data on current and planned clinical placement activity and student numbers
  • assess and identify capacity for growth in student numbers and clinical placements up to 2014
  • identify options for the size, configuration and geographic boundaries of integrated clinical training networks that will exist for the coordination, planning and facilitation of clinical training across sectors
  • identify appropriate organisations to host the networks.
